Summary

The right kind of book to be done on audio。 It is like watching a thriller movie unfold minus visuals。 Fast paced, exciting。 However the book could've been 2 hours shorter。 The right kind of book to be done on audio。 It is like watching a thriller movie unfold minus visuals。 Fast paced, exciting。 However the book could've been 2 hours shorter。 。。。more

Wow - I wasn’t expecting a book that deals so heavily in creating and maintaining an illegal website to be so interesting。 I assumed that it would involve tons of references to coding and/or software and hardware information that would be incredibly dry。 This book honestly does read like a thriller, and gives you the background into the development of Silk Road as well as the rise and fall of the Boy Scout who started it。 I listened to the Audible version, which I thought was excellent。 I can ha Wow - I wasn’t expecting a book that deals so heavily in creating and maintaining an illegal website to be so interesting。 I assumed that it would involve tons of references to coding and/or software and hardware information that would be incredibly dry。 This book honestly does read like a thriller, and gives you the background into the development of Silk Road as well as the rise and fall of the Boy Scout who started it。 I listened to the Audible version, which I thought was excellent。 I can hardly wait to take a road trip with my husband and listen again。 。。。more

。。。more

Unputdownable。 When starting this book, I have no idea about the Silk Road or its owner, so I found the book really interesting and it was keeping me at the edge of my sit。 The writing is very engaging and informative。 I like how despite never talked to Ross as part of a research for the book, Bilton is able to present Ross as a balanced character where it made it so easy for readers to emphatize with Ross。 On the flip side though, this made most of the events in the books, especially Ross’ inne Unputdownable。 When starting this book, I have no idea about the Silk Road or its owner, so I found the book really interesting and it was keeping me at the edge of my sit。 The writing is very engaging and informative。 I like how despite never talked to Ross as part of a research for the book, Bilton is able to present Ross as a balanced character where it made it so easy for readers to emphatize with Ross。 On the flip side though, this made most of the events in the books, especially Ross’ inner monologues and dialogues with friends/girlfriend seem less credible that they happened。 But all in all, it is a great nonfiction that reads like a fiction crime thriller。 。。。more

Extremely well-writtenEasy read on the complicated topic。 As a non-fiction, occasionally felt more like a novel, which led me to question the some facts behind the story。

A thin line between right and wrong!Leaving a legacy drove Ross to make decisions that changed the selling of drugs, guns and human organs on the Dark Web。。。Silk Road。

Fascinating story!

A Fantastic story well written by the author。 The timelines and stories put together painted a precise picture of what it would have been like to watch this series of events unfold in real time。

Quite a story! This wasn't something I was completely informed on because it occurred while I was still pretty young。 It was an interesting progression from young/naive to committing crimes and facilitating others to do the same。 I am unsure how I feel about his sentencing because I believe in freedom of choice but I also understand how truly bad some people are and when given the outlets, those people wreak havoc on others。 That part of the story presented an interesting moral dilemma that I en Quite a story! A gripping story of the underworld behind the Silk Road website for selling illegal drugs online。 Easy read that kept me interested。 Not my usual type of read because of my values。

Intriguing history of the rise and fall of the Silk Road and Ross Ulbricht。

I came in not knowing much about Ross but being sympathetic to him, thinking that his sentence is unjust, and that it was “just a website”; I came out thinking, “ok, maybe he deserves to spend a little time in prison”。 I do still think two lifetimes + 40 years is absurd, especially considering that the agents on the case who bamboozled him only got a few years。 At any rate, the book is very compelling and gets four stars for that alone, despite possibly being exaggerated or sensationalist in som I came in not knowing much about Ross but being sympathetic to him, thinking that his sentence is unjust, and that it was “just a website”; I came out thinking, “ok, maybe he deserves to spend a little time in prison”。 I do still think two lifetimes + 40 years is absurd, especially considering that the agents on the case who bamboozled him only got a few years。 At any rate, the book is very compelling and gets four stars for that alone, despite possibly being exaggerated or sensationalist in some areas, as Ross’s mother has claimed。 。。。more

Bardzo dokładnie opisany proces tworzenia przez Rossa Urlicha witryny Silk Road - największego sklepu internetowego po ciemnej stronie internetu。 W jego pierwotnym zamyśle miał to być serwis umożliwiający kupno i sprzedaż lekkich narkotyków。 Często powtarzane jest utopijne zdanie, że handel narkotykami w internecie miał uchronić przed śmiercią z rąk handlarzy narkotyków na ulicy。 Z drugiej strony jego tropem podążają agenci pocztowi i federalni, którzy dużo czasu zmarnowali poszukując Rossa oddz Bardzo dokładnie opisany proces tworzenia przez Rossa Urlicha witryny Silk Road - największego sklepu internetowego po ciemnej stronie internetu。 W jego pierwotnym zamyśle miał to być serwis umożliwiający kupno i sprzedaż lekkich narkotyków。 Często powtarzane jest utopijne zdanie, że handel narkotykami w internecie miał uchronić przed śmiercią z rąk handlarzy narkotyków na ulicy。 Z drugiej strony jego tropem podążają agenci pocztowi i federalni, którzy dużo czasu zmarnowali poszukując Rossa oddzielnie, dopiero połączenie działań wielu samodzielnych agentów i pedantyczna skrupulatność jednego z agentów pocztowych doprowadziła do zatrzymania Rossa i w konsekwencji skazania。 Doskonale opisana mozolna praca dziesiątek ludzi, których jedynym celem było dorwanie twórcy i zamknięcie Silk Road。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Very interesting story。 Weird guy。 Interesting side stories。 Very well researched。 Author is a special correspondent for Vanity Fair。 That said, this book is in many ways like a VF article 。 。 。 too detailed, too long, overwritten, and possibly at least a bit sensationalized。 Glad I read it though。

Very good storytelling in this book。 I would have liked more technical details of how Ross built the site, but I can get over it。
